The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Kalju Suitsev (ASN: RA-19347534), United States Army, for gallantry in action while a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division. Corporal Suitsev displayed gallantry in action against an armed enemy on 14 September 1950 and 15 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On the night of 14 September 1950, the defensive position of his company was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Corporal Suitsev, an assistant machine gunner, remained in position and at times was forced to use his pistol to drive off the enemy who had penetrated to within grenade range. When the machine gunner was killed, he took over the operation of the machine gun and maintained a steady base of fire against the attacking enemy. When his ammunition was exhausted, he retrieved a rifle from a wounded comrade and continued to fight off the enemy, until the assault was repulsed with heavy losses. During this engagement, he killed an estimated 37 enemy by his fire and was largely instrumental to the success of his company in defending its position. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Suitsev reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
