The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Elmer Snodgrass (ASN: RA-6852515), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery A, 15th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 7th Infantry Division, in action near Hoengsung, Korea, on 12 February 1951. On that date, Sergeant Snodgrass was protecting a road intersection with the two M-16 multiple machine gun half-tracks of his section to permit the passage of a withdrawing task force. While firing against the enemy, Sergeant Snodgrass saw a wounded soldier crawl out of a burning house. Making his way through intense enemy mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire, he rendered first aid to the wounded man and discovered seven other seriously wounded men in the house, all of whom were on litters and unarmed. While Sergeant Snodgrass was rendering first aid to them, the house was hit by enemy mortar fire. With the assistance of three members of his section, he carried the wounded men to a place of comparative safety. Sergeant Snodgrass’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
