The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Simon S. Sayers (ASN: RA-6390930), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy while serving with the 7th Reconnaissance Company, 7th Infantry Division, near Hoengsong, Korea, on 13 February 1951. On this date, Sergeant Sayers was the tank commander of a tank with the lead elements of a task force proceeding through enemy positions from Hoengsong to Wonju. As the task force proceeded south, it was ambushed by a numerically superior enemy force which succeeded in setting fire to several vehicles of the task force, including a truck and trailer loaded with demolitions. Without regard for his personal safety, Sergeant Sayers proceeded to use his tank to remove the burning vehicles from the road. As he was thus engaged, he came under intense enemy small arms fire. Using the spotlight atop the tank turret to draw the enemy fire and to locate the enemy, he was able to direct fire upon them. On three occasions it was necessary for Sergeant Sayers to voluntarily dismount under fire in order to attack a tow cable to the brining and disabled vehicles. The gallant actions of Sergeant Sayers on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
