The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Emmanuel R. Messler, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Company C, 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action at Tujon, Korea, on 23 September 1950. On that date, the platoon to which Corporal Messler was attached came under heavy enemy small arms fire. Several members of the platoon were wounded immediately and Corporal Messler, with complete disregard for his own safety, went to them, administering first aid and evacuating one of them to a more concealed and covered position. His fearlessness in repeatedly exposing himself to enemy small arms fire while assisting the wounded was an inspiration to his entire platoon and resulted in the probable saving of one soldier’s life. Corporal Messler’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Medical Services.
