During World War II, James Little became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 7 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, flying combat in the Korean War where he was credited with shooting down another enemy airplane for a 2-war total of 8 enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial combat. During the Korean War, on June 27, 1950, he became the FIRST member of the U.S. Air Force to perform an action meriting award of the Silver Star. He served in the Vietnam War as Deputy Chief of Staff of the SEVENTH Air Force, and retired in 1969 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) James Walter Little (AFSN: 0-8099A), United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a P-40 Fighter Pilot of the 75th Fighter Squadron, 23d Fighter Group, TENTH Air Force, in action against the enemy in aerial combat in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations during World War II. The skillful and zealous manner in which he has sought out the enemy and destroyed him, his devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major James Walter Little (AFSN: 0-8099A), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as Pilot of an F-82 Twin Mustang Fighter Airplane of the 339th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (All Weather), 8th Fighter-Interceptor Group, FIFTH Air Force, in action in Korea, on 27 June 1950. Major Little distinguished himself in a extraordinary meritorious manner by displaying outstanding leadership, judgment and gallantry of a high degree while leading an escort mission of F-82 aircraft over Kimpo Airdrome, in Korea on 27 June 1950. Major Little led his flight on a attack against a flight of enemy LA-7 aircraft which were attacking and scoring hits on four (4) C-54 transports evacuating civil service employees and military dependents from Korea. After the enemy aircraft were destroyed, one (1) by Major Little, he assembled the transports with his flight and led them to their destination in Japan in spite of a fire which broke out in the cockpit of his aircraft. His ability and skill, and willingness to make the decision to fire the first shot from American guns, brought great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
