The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Laurence A. Johnson (ASN: 0-33361), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the period 3-4 June 1951, the 2d Battalion, under Colonel Johnson’s command, had the mission of establishing a bridgehead, near Songjong, Korea, across the Hant’an River and secure high ground on the opposite side. Locating his commanding post in the immediate area chosen for the crossing, he supervised the initial fording of the river by Company E, 2d Battalion, his presence inspiring the troops to carry on with the operation, despite the strong enemy opposition. After two other companies had successfully reached the opposite shore, they established a defensive perimeter, which was subsequently counterattacked by the enemy. Colonel Johnson, although exposed to hostile artillery and mortar fire, moved and then maintained his command post within a short distance of the engagement, with only a small group to act as local security, directing the defense and personally leading F Company across the river to effect a timely reinforcing of the embattled units and repel the hostile attackers. Colonel Johnson’s astute leadership and heroism reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters 3d Infantry Division General Orders No. 507 (November 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Laurence A. Johnson (ASN: 0-33361), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Shortly after midnight on 26 April 1951, the 2d Battalion was attacked by the enemy in the vicinity of Ilbisang-ni, Korea. So furious was the frenzied assault that the enemy troops succeeded in surrounding the battalion command post and in breaking through a portion of the defensive perimeter protecting this nerve center of battalion operations. Colonel Johnson, moving decisively amid the confusion of battle, called for artillery support which he adjusted with devastating effect upon the enemy, even though shells exploded within twenty-five yards of his own position. He then formed a relief force from all available personnel within the command post area and, repeatedly exposing himself to the withering hostile fire, placed them in advantageous positions from which their added firepower aided in bolstering the defense line grimly held by the besieged troops. Unceasing in his efforts to withstand the hostile onslaught, Colonel Johnson, constantly reorganized and shifted his forces to meet new tests of enemy strength, personally supervising the re-supply of ammunition and assisting the evacuation of the wounded. Throughout the night-long engagement his calm resourceful presence enabled the battalion to repulse the enemy attack and finally compel him to withdraw with heavy losses. Colonel Johnson’s brilliant leadership and personal gallantry reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
