The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Steven Gaspard (ASN: RA-18304287), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 September 1950, in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date, the 2d Battalion was under heavy mortar and artillery fire. When telephone lines to front line units were cut by this fire, Sergeant Gaspard, wire crew chief, immediately began to check the line. Under extremely heavy enemy fire, he succeeded in repairing the break, thus restoring vital communications between the Battalion Command Post and the companies. His heroic and voluntary action was a source of great inspiration to all who observed it. The gallant conduct of Sergeant Gaspard reflects a great credit upon himself and the military service.
