The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harold D. English (ASN: US-53112321), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a member of Company A, 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, near Chorwon, Korea. On 24 March 1953, as the company moved out in the attack, it came under a heavy concentration of enemy small arms and mortar fire. The enemy then set up a machine gun covering the attack route and was inflicting heavy casualties on the friendly forces. When the attack began to falter in the face of withering enemy fire, Corporal English, with complete disregard for his personal safety, left his position of comparative safety, moved up to within forty yards of the enemy machine gun, and with one blast of his recoilless rifle neutralized the position, thus enabling the company to continue their advance. The gallantry displayed by Corporal English reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
