The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Herman W. Dammer (ASN: 0-389797), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Ranger Battalion, on the early morning of 12 February 1943, in the vicinity 5 miles west of Sened Station, Tunisia. Major Dammer led his company in the assault of heavy machine gun and cannon positions, in a manner which inspired vigorous participation by all members of his unit. The courage, leadership and devotion to duty displayed by Major Dammer, was a credit to the Armed Forces of the United States, and is highly commendable.
