On 19 March 1951, Captain Anderson was participating in a combat patrol near Yuman-ni, Korea, when it became necessary to coordinate an attack by two platoons. Strong enemy firepower pinned down one of these units and ignoring his personal danger, Captain Anderson ran through the hostile fusillade and reorganized the unit into a proper attack formation. Then ordering an assault, he advanced with the lead elements, directing artillery support and mortar fire. His aggressive leadership enabled the unit to seize their objective with a minimum number of casualties and cause the enemy to retreat in disorder. Captain Anderson’s heroism under fire reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 215 (June 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Leo Donald Anderson (ASN: 0-2018631), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Infantry, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 27 April 1951, enemy forces in the vicinity of Uijongbu, Korea, launched a powerful attack against the 1st and 3d Battalions of the 65th Infantry. Penetrating the sector of the line held by these two units, these hostile forces succeeded in isolating one company from its battalion. Captain Anderson, who was in the battalion observation post, realizing the seriousness of the situation and the possibility of a general breakthrough, moved forward to collect and assemble remnants of two companies, into a defensive perimeter to block the existing gap. With complete disregard for his own safety, he crossed the open bullet-swept terrain and organized elements of the two companies fusing them into an effective defensive force. Captain Anderson then formed squad patrols to go forward, and, under his personal supervision, they evacuated the wounded. Captain Anderson’s conspicuous gallantry and courageous demeanor reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
