The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel Andrew Julius Evans, Jr. (AFSN: FR-4072/0-23882), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Deputy Commander, New York Air Defense Sector, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, from 14 November 1957 to 28 September 1959. By his keen analysis of the many problems involved, Colonel Evans was highly instrumental in the orderly transition to an operational status of the New York Air Defense Sector by the programmed date of 1 July 1958. Under his leadership, effective operating procedures were developed which greatly facilitated the task of SAGE Sectors entering the air defense system. The outstanding leadership, judgment and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Evans reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
