The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Infantry) Romeo Henry Bucknell, Jr. (ASN: 0-1330151), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 May 1951, near Soksa-ri, Korea, the enemy launched powerful drives against the 65th Infantry Regiment and Company A was dispatched to occupy precipitous mountain terrain in the western sector of the battle zone and block the hostile advance from that direction. Under Captain Bucknell’s command, the unit, hampered by driving rains and hazardous ground features, drove steadily forward to accomplish the mission. Upon arriving at a river defile, the company encountered the enemy, but, Captain Bucknell called for artillery support which dispersed the hostile troops. Pushing further into enemy territory, the unit caught an enemy force in a trap and the air strikes requested by Captain Bucknell inflicted severe punishment upon it. Although other units had been ordered to the same objective, Company A, 1st Battalion, having overcome all major opposition, was the first to reach it. Captain Bucknell directed extensive patrol activity to contact a relieving Republic of Korea unit which furnished the company with the first rations it had had for three days. Maneuvering in the area during the night, Captain Bucknell, noticing that a platoon was missing, moved alone over a mountain trail and led it across a turbulent river to safety. Captain Bucknell’s confident leadership, tactical skill and personal heroism was directly responsible for his unit’s commendable accomplishment of a graveling mission and reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
