Headquarters, XXIV Corps, General Orders No. 409 (May 8, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Samuel E. Wall, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 1st Battalion (Automatic Weapons) (Self Propelled), in the Republic of Vietnam. Platoon Sergeant Wall distinguished himself on 10 April 1970, while serving with one of his twin 40-mm. anti-aircraft, track-mounted, weapons sections in support of the Special Forces Camp at Mai Loc. During the early morning hours, an intense enemy attack was launched on the camp. Sergeant Wall courageously moved through withering small arms fire to consolidate his men and direct their efforts in gaining fire superiority. He repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire in order to direct retaliatory fire which was instrumental in preventing a breach of the perimeter wire. Throughout the battle, Sergeant Wall was calm and proficient although facing a numerically superior enemy force. His extraordinary heroism in close combat was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
