The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Charles Robert Tyler (AFSN: AO-3053955/FR-58050), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander deep within hostile territory on 23 August 1967. On that date, Major Tyler led a flight of F-4’s in a strike against a vital railroad assembly area. Without regard for his personal safety, Major Tyler turned into the attack of two hostile aircraft and diverted them away from the main strike force. Due to his courageous reaction, a highly important mission was successfully completed. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Tyler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
