    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jules C. Smith, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force near DaNang Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 28 April 1970. On that date, Sergeant Smith was lowered to the survivors of a Marine helicopter to give first aid to the injured survivors, and prepare them for recovery. His rescue helicopter came under extensive hostile fire and was forced to pull away leaving Sergeant Smith who gave protection and first aid to an injured Marine pilot, and directed the delivery of suppressive ordinance until their rescue could be completed. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Sergeant Smith has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Jules C. Smith, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at DaNang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 16 March 1970. On that date, Sergeant Smith was serving as Pararescue specialist on the crew of an HH-43F Rescue Helicopter, which responded to the site of a EC-121 crash. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Smith, despite exploding ordnance and burning fuel and oil, unhesitatingly worked on the ground, administering immediate first aid to the survivors. Through his efforts, Sergeant Smith was instrumental in the saving of eight survivors’ lives. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Smith reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
