The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jules C. Smith, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force near DaNang Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 28 April 1970. On that date, Sergeant Smith was lowered to the survivors of a Marine helicopter to give first aid to the injured survivors, and prepare them for recovery. His rescue helicopter came under extensive hostile fire and was forced to pull away leaving Sergeant Smith who gave protection and first aid to an injured Marine pilot, and directed the delivery of suppressive ordinance until their rescue could be completed. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Sergeant Smith has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
