Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1136 (July 6, 1966)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Wayne J. Serafini (ASN: RA-16792502), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, as a member of a platoon-size combat patrol in the Republic of Vietnam, on 2 June 1966. At approximately 1200 hours Specialist Serafini’s platoon made contact with an estimated Viet Cong platoon employing machine guns and other automatic weapons. The Viet Cong were well-entrenched in a bunker and tunnel complex that was concealed by the dense jungle undergrowth. Their initial burst of automatic fire killed the platoon medical aidman and wounded several others. Specialist Serafini unhesitatingly and on his own initiative, moved to the front of the platoon and retrieved the medical aid kit and began to treat the wounded. Although wounded in the right hand, he continued to expose himself to the intense automatic fire as he moved bout the area to treat his wounded comrades throughout the battle that lasted for more than two hours. Specialist Serafini ignored his own wound and allowed himself to be treated and evacuated only after contact was broken. Specialist Four Serafini’s unquestionable valor in close combat against superior hostile forces was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
