The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Vincent Anthony Scungio (AFSN: FR-71468), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a combat aircrew member in Southeast Asia on 3 July 1966. On that date, while under intense and accurate fire from unfriendly forces, Captain Scungio demonstrated cool courage, undaunted determination, and superior skill in pressing home devastating air attacks against hostile positions. Persevering in the face of danger and death, he relentlessly and effectively aided in neutralizing the hostile forces. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Scungio reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Captain Vincent Anthony Scungio (AFSN: FR-71468), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Electronics Warfare Officer near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 21 August 1966. On that date, Captain Scungio performed duties in the lead ship of a flight that was to protect a large strike force from surface-to-air missile attacks. Captain Scungio, without regard for his personal safety, directed his pilot in an attack that damaged his aircraft and scattered the flight members. Captain Scungio continued in a professional manner to direct the attack which resulted in destruction of the missile site. This courageous and aggressive action greatly enhanced the safety and effectiveness of the main strike force. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Scungio reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
