The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Robert R. Sawhill, Jr., United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander deep within unfriendly territory on 23 August 1967. On that date, Major Sawhill flew as number three in a flight of F-4s striking a vital railroad assembly area. While evading attacks from hostile aircraft, intense anti-aircraft fire, and threats from surface-to-air missiles, Major Sawhill successfully interdicted this important military target. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Sawhill reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
