The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Robert F. Potvin (ASN: W-3157700), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Potvin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), on 12 June 1968, as a Team Leader of an armed helicopter during a screening mission in the Republic of Vietnam. While providing cover for a ground unit, Warrant Officer Potvin spotted enemy bunkers. Disregarding his own safety, Warrant Officer Potvin exposed himself to the hostile ground fire as he flew at low altitude over the enemy emplacements drawing fire away from the ground unit. His actions enabled the company to break contact. Warrant Officer Potvin then provided cover for the evacuation of the wounded personnel. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
