The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Lonnie Edward Parker (ASN: US-54386865), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Parker distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 13 March 1967, while serving as a Squad Leader with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, during operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. While maneuvering to locate enemy positions, Specialist Parker and his squad came under intense fire from a well-concealed cave high upon a boulder laden ridge. Specialist Parker immediately deployed his men, and at the same time pinpointed the enemy position. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Parker then moved under intense hostile fire until he reached a point where he could throw hand grenades into the enemy position. Turning his attention to his men, he began directing them forward when he was struck and mortally wounded by enemy sniper fire. Specialist Parker’s courageous action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
