The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Timothy Tillman Nay (ASN: 0-5521722), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Nay distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 13 March 1969, while serving as a Forward Observer with Company D, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, during an ambush patrol mission in the district of Giao Duc. After his company came under attack, Lieutenant Nay courageously took up an exposed position to direct gunship fire against the enemy locations. During ensuing action, he continually exposed himself to hostile fire while moving along his unit’s perimeter to place effective fire against the enemy positions and adjust artillery fire into the area. His courageous actions were instrumental in routing the enemy force, and undoubtedly saved many lives. First Lieutenant Nay’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
