Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 10864 (August 28, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Donald Henry McMains, Jr. (ASN: US-546666898), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant McMains distinguished himself by heroic actions on 9 August 1969, while serving as Acting Platoon Sergeant with Company B, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a sweep operation, Company B came in contact with a large enemy force. Immediately, Sergeant McMains began crawling towards the hostile positions as he threw hand grenades on the aggressors. As he was maneuvering through the area, Sergeant McMains was fatally wounded. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Sergeant McMains’ bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
