The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel William Burdette Maxson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as Pilot of a B-57 aircraft of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing, in action in Southeast Asia, on 16 March 1968. On that date, Colonel Maxson piloted a B-57 on a night, armed interdiction mission against hostile truck traffic. Despite very accurate hostile anti-aircraft fire, Colonel Maxson completed his mission with outstanding precision and inflicted heavy damage on a hostile truck convoy. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Maxson has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
