The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Major General William Burdette Maxson, United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Maxson distinguished himself as Vice Commander, Headquarters FIFTEENTH Air Force, from 31 August 1983 to 31 August 1984. During this period, General Maxson’s forceful leadership and outstanding and dedicated efforts were significantly displayed in the direction of all Strategic Air Command forces under FIFTEENTH Air Force. His efforts have contributed to the successful mission accomplishment of the strongest deterrent force in the history of the United States. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Maxson culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Order G-1565 (1969)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel William Burdette Maxson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as Pilot of a B-57 aircraft of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing, in action in Southeast Asia, on 16 March 1968. On that date, Colonel Maxson piloted a B-57 on a night, armed interdiction mission against hostile truck traffic. Despite very accurate hostile anti-aircraft fire, Colonel Maxson completed his mission with outstanding precision and inflicted heavy damage on a hostile truck convoy. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Maxson has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
