The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Major General William Burdette Maxson, United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Maxson distinguished himself as Vice Commander, Headquarters FIFTEENTH Air Force, from 31 August 1983 to 31 August 1984. During this period, General Maxson’s forceful leadership and outstanding and dedicated efforts were significantly displayed in the direction of all Strategic Air Command forces under FIFTEENTH Air Force. His efforts have contributed to the successful mission accomplishment of the strongest deterrent force in the history of the United States. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Maxson culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
