The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Johnny F. Knight (ASN: US-53843044), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Company B, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action on 14 January 1969, in the Republic of Vietnam. While providing security for a supply convoy, Company B came under a massive ambush from a large North Vietnamese Army force. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Knight began to move from track to track pointing out targets of opportunity for his men. Exposed to deadly communist weaponry, Sergeant Knight continued to leap from vehicle to vehicle repairing .50 caliber machine guns, firing m-60’s, directing mortars and keeping constant radio contact. Throughout the 12-hour battle, Sergeant Knight adjusted artillery and mortars from his position atop the platoon’s command track, while insuring that the wounded were treated and evacuated. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the thwarting of the insurgent force and success of the mission. Sergeant Knight’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
