The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Brigadier General Newton Martin Curtis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 15 January 1865, while serving with U.S. Volunteers, in action at Fort Fisher, North Carolina. The first man to pass through the stockade, Brigadier General Curtis personally led each assault on the traverses and was four times wounded.
