The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Curtis James Kaupp, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Kaupp distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 21 November 1968 while serving with Company A, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. When his unit’s forward operational base came under an intense enemy attack, Specialist Kaupp continuously held his position against the repeated attacks, enabling the remainder of his unit to reorganize and repel the attack. His valiant efforts prevented the enemy from overrunning the forward operational base, but in doing so, Specialist Kaupp was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
