The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Paull David Jose (ASN: US-54970512), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Jose distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 27 October 1968, while serving as a Rifleman with Company B, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission south of Dong Tam. After his platoon came under a fierce barrage of rocket and machine gun fire, sustaining several casualties, Specialist Jose courageously moved through the fusillade in an assault on an enemy bunker. Using automatic weapons fire to hold the enemy soldiers down, he was ale to reach the emplacement and destroy it with hand grenades, enabling his comrades to care for the wounded and reach cover. Specialist Jose’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against an armed hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
