The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert Donald Jenkins (ASN: US-53906429), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 22 March 1967, in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Jenkins was serving as a Medic with the 4th Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, on a mission to aid Company A, which was heavily engaged with a battalion of North Vietnamese Regulars. When the 4th Platoon came into contact with the enemy they encountered a heavy volume of enemy fire. While the platoon was attempting to cross an open field, two of Private First Class Jenkins’ comrades were struck by enemy fire and fell wounded. Without regard for his safety, Private First Class Jenkins unhesitatingly began to crawl toward them. While crossing an open area with little cover, he received several wounds, but continued to expose himself to the barrage of hostile rounds. Before reaching his wounded comrades, Private First Class Jenkins was mortally wounded. Private First Class Jenkins’ aggressiveness, determination and personal bravery are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army. Losing his own life while attempting to aid his comrades marks Private First Class Jenkins as a soldier of unparalleled dedication to duty, and his intrepid actions reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and his country.
