The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] Gary Olson Holsinger (ASN: US-51645354), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Corporal Holsinger distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action 4 February 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company B, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, during a combat mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Private First Class Holsinger exposed himself to the hostile fire as he placed effective suppressive fire on the assaulting enemy force. While engaging the enemy, Private First Class Holsinger was mortally wounded, but his action inflicted numerous hostile casualties and contributed greatly to the successful repulsion of the enemy attack. Private First Class Holsinger’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
