The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Jeffrey Giles Hamilton (ASN: 0-5339197), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Hamilton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 22 February 1968, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, during a search and destroy mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense hostile fire, Lieutenant Hamilton immediately rushed forward through the enemy fire and succeeded in destroying an enemy fortification with hand grenades. Returning to his men, he then regrouped them and led a successful assault against the remaining hostile positions. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
