Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders No. G-172 (January 16, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Joel T. Hall (AFSN: FR-76914), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as an F-100 Pilot of the 3d Tactical Fighter Wing, Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam, in action near An Loc, Republic of Vietnam, on 11 July 1967. On that night, Captain Hall flew as the Wingman in a flight of two F-100’s that scrambled from Bien Hoa Air Base to support a Special Forces Camp that was in imminent danger of being overrun by a numerically superior North Vietnamese force. Braving extremely hazardous weather conditions and severely limited visibility which greatly complicated the accurate delivery of weapons, Captain Hall made numerous successive napalm and low level bomb deliveries in close proximity to friendly forces and in the face of intense hostile ground fire with such pinpoint accuracy and devastating effect that the aggressor’s attack was broken and the surviving North Vietnamese routed. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Hall has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
