The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fifth Class Harvey Goldberg (ASN: US-51611091), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Goldberg distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions from 10 through 12 May 1968, while serving with Company A, 70th Engineer Battalion, at Kham Duc. On 10 May an element of his unit became engaged in a fire fight at the south end of the Kham Duc airstrip, and Specialist Goldberg was dispatched as part of a relief force. While at the scene of battle, he continually exposed himself to enemy fire to tend the wounded, assist in their evacuation, and reload ammunition magazines for his comrades engaged in combat. When the company perimeter came under mortar attack on 12 May, Specialist Goldberg again exposed himself to hostile fire to treat and evacuate wounded personnel. Although wounded early in the action, he continued to treat the casualties until he was again wounded so severely that he required immediate evacuation. Specialist Fifth Class Goldberg’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
