The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Herbert J. Gavin, United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Gavin distinguished himself as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics; and Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, from 7 July 1971 to 24 February 1974. During this period, General Gavin’s outstanding achievements, dynamic leadership and initiative resulted in the development of an extraordinarily responsive tactical logistics system specifically tailored to meet the worldwide commitments of the Tactical Air Command in support of national and international objectives. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Gavin reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
