Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Orders No. 6429 (November 4, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Defense Artillery) Augustine Garcia, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force on 29 August 1970, while serving as Senior Advisor, Mobile Advisory Team, II-13, Dong Xuan District, Phu Yen Province, Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Camp Dong Tre was attacked by North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong forces with mortars, rockets, small arms, and explosive charges. Captain Garcia immediately ordered his team to take cover in a bunker and voluntarily remained in the team house to give covering fire to maintain vital radio communications. Observing an estimated squad of enemy soldiers preparing to assault the bunker where his teammates were, he attempted, with complete disregard for his personal safety, to halt their assault, receiving severe wounds in the process. Despite his wounds he crawled back to the radio and continued to call for and adjust gunships, flareships, and artillery support. The team house was subsequently destroyed and, although weaponless and without communications, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to fire red star clusters and hand flares to signal the orbiting aerial support. Continuing to ignore his serious wounds, he refused evacuation until he was assured that the most seriously wounded personnel had been treated and evacuated. Captain Garcia’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
