The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Airman First Class James F. Gallagher (AFSN: 12762971), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a UC-123B flare handler of the 606th Air Commando Squadron, in Southeast Asia on 24 March 1968. On that date, Airman Gallagher invaluably aided the pilots in flying their burning aircraft from over hostile territory to a safe landing after the aircraft had sustained two direct hits in the left engine nacelle fuel tank and flap area. Despite the intense fire engulfing the left side of the aircraft and coming into the open cargo door, Airman Gallagher calmly jettisoned ignited flares through the wall of flame. Disregarding his own personal safety, he continued to jettison flares and ground markers, thereby permitting the successful recovery of the aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Airman Gallagher has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
