The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Paul John Foti, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Foti distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving with Troop A, 1st Squadron (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action on 19 October 1970, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on an emergency extraction mission for a long range reconnaissance patrol in heavy contact, Warrant Officer Foti’s aircraft came under intense hostile fire. Realizing that immediate extraction was necessary because of dense ground fog, heavy rains and ensuing darkness, Warrant Officer Foti lowered his aircraft into the heavy contact area. Exposing himself to intense enemy fire, Warrant Officer Foti courageously and professionally extracted the patrol from the hostile pick-up zone. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
