The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major Alonzo Lunan Ferguson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-105 Thunderchief Pilot of the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing, Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, FAR EAST Air Forces, in action over North Vietnam, on 9 October 1967. On that date, Major Ferguson was leading a force of fighter-bombers on a combined mission against a hostile transportation link and hostile interceptor aircraft. As he prepared to roll-in on the assigned target, Major Ferguson suddenly spotted a hostile surface-to-air missile site and through his outstanding airmanship repositioned his element for a proper delivery, and, courageously electing to send the remainder of his force onto the assigned target, Major Ferguson left the protection of the other flights, dove down through the intense barrages of flak, and successfully destroyed several missiles already poised on their launchers. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Ferguson has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
