The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John Fer (AFSN: FR-63823), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an aircrew pilotof the 41st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 19 September 1966. On that date, Captain Fer, by his outstanding display of professionalism and courage in the face of hostile fire was highly instrumental in the overall success of the air operation. The results of his highly commendable efforts provided a major contribution to the tactical air mission in Southeast Asia. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Fer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Fer led a flight of two unarmed electronic countermeasures support aircraft and four high cover aircraft into an extremely hazardous area to suppress radar controlled anti-aircraft artillery and Surface-to-Air missiles in support of strike aircraft. Aware of the possibility of lethal missile sites and hostile aircraft in the area, Captain Fer continued on the mission. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Fer has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
