The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Allan A. Feltmann, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Battery G, 1st Battalion, 65th Artillery Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Feltmann distinguished himself from 8 July 1970 to 23 July 1970, while serving as Squad Leader of a Quad-50 machine gun crew at Fire Support Base Ripcord. Throughout this period Sergeant Feltmann and his crew repeatedly provided direct fire for support operations of the 2d Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, and were responsible for the destruction of numerous North Vietnamese Army mortar and recoilless rifle positions. On 14 July 1970, while assisting a night defensive position on a nearby hill to repel an enemy attack, Sergeant Feltmann and his crew came under intense fire. Though their weapon sustained damage from the shrapnel of rounds striking around it, Sergeant Feltmann and his crew maintained their fire on the enemy and helped to drive off the attackers. On 23 July 1970, all troops were being removed from First Support Base Ripcord and a helicopter was shot down. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Feltmann directed covering fire for the downed craft and other helicopters participating in the evacuation. The enemy reacted with intense fire on his position and three members of Sergeant Feltmann’s crew were injured. Sergeant Feltmann ignored the fire concentrated on his position and stood fully exposed to better direct fire during the six-hour evacuation of the fire base. Sergeant Feltmann’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
