The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Peter Matthew Feierabend (ASN: 16759758), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations while serving with the 560th Military Police Company, 18th Military Police Brigade, in action in the Republic of Vietnam, on 16 February 1964. Private Feierabend was on duty as a Military Police near a theater in Saigon when a taxicab stopped in front of the theater and discharged two passengers. As one of the passengers approached him and fired a weapon, he became fully aware of hostile infiltration. Although seriously wounded, he completely disregarded his own personal safety and engaged in gunfire with his assailants to warn the theater occupants of the impending danger, and, while attempting to clear his weapon, was mortally wounded. Through his courageous and unselfish efforts in delaying the action of the attackers, the personnel in the theater were warned in time to protect themselves against a subsequent bomb explosion. His fortitude, heroic conduct, and dedicated devotion to duty saved many lives and kept injuries to a minimum. Private Feierabend’s conspicuous gallantry is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
