The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Harold Dunwoody, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight in Southeast Asia on 3 June 1971. On that date, Colonel Dunwoody was scrambled in support of a successful Search and Rescue mission for the crew of an aircraft which had been downed by ground fire in hostile territory. Colonel Dunwoody, with complete disregard for his own safety, willingly exposed himself to hostile ground fire on numerous tree-top intimidation passes and eventually directed the successful recovery of two crewmembers. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Dunwoody reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
