The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Harold Dunwoody, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an A-1 Tactical Fighter Pilot in Southeast Asia, on 26 February 1971. On that date he was scrambled in support of a Search and Rescue mission in progress for two downed crewmen who had abandoned their battle damaged aircraft deep in hostile territory. By his accurate expenditure of ordnance while protecting the vulnerable rescue helicopter, Colonel Dunwoody denied the opposing forces access to the survivors and played a major role in the successful recovery of both crewmen. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Dunwoody reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
