The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Harold Dunwoody, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an A-1 Tactical Fighter Pilot in Southeast Asia on 12 December 1970. On that date, Colonel Dunwoody was scrambled as a Sandy Pilot in support of a downed airman deep in hostile territory. Although he lost his radio communication and was hit by hostile fire, he unceasingly attacked the hostile guns, drawing their fire upon himself and allowing the helicopter to withdraw successfully. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Dunwoody reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
