The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Carroll Hilton Dunn, Jr. (ASN: OF-107647), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Dunn distinguished himself while serving as a Convoy Commander with Company D, 4th Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. On 29 December 1968, Captain Dunn was returning from the Plei Me Special Forces Camp when his convoy was suddenly subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons fire from well-camouflaged positions. Ordering his personnel and tanks to engage the enemy, Captain Dunn remained in his exposed position directing their fire. When his radio was destroyed by enemy fire, he ran through the hail of enemy bullets to one of the tanks. When gunships started engaging the enemy positions, he coordinated the fire of his tanks with the gunships. When the gunships expended their armaments the convoy was again attacked and Captain Dunn adjusted artillery fire on the enemy while the convoy broke contact. Captain Dunn’s courageous acts, outstanding leadership and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
