The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Mark Hannay Dixon (ASN: RA-11806821), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Dixon distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 29 April 1969 while serving as a Rifleman with Company C, 2d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, during a reconnaissance in force mission in Long An Province. After a member of his unit was seriously wounded by enemy fire, Private Dixon courageously crawled, under intense hostile fire, to the fallen soldier, and began administering first aid. Then, as he started to carry the wounded man to a secure area for evacuation, Private Dixon was hit by enemy fire. Disregarding his own injuries, Private Dixon continued to move his wounded comrade toward the evacuation point, until mortally wounded by hostile fire. Private Dixon’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
