The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Harvey Lynn Cooley (ASN: 15844358), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Infantry Brigade (Separate) (Light). Specialist Fourth Class Cooley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 May 1968. On this date, Specialist Cooley was serving as a Medical Aidman attached to Company D, on a platoon-size reconnaissance in force operation southwest of Saigon when it became heavily engaged with a well-entrenched Viet Cong force. During the initial burst of fire, three men were wounded and the remainder of the platoon was pinned down. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Cooley moved forward under intense fire to two of the casualties and began treating their wounds. At this time, his platoon maneuvered against the enemy positions and gained fire superiority over the enemy. Following a brief lull in the firing, the third wounded attempted to crawl from his exposed position to Specialist Cooley’s location. Seeing that the wounded man could move no further because of the severity of his wounds, Specialist Cooley unhesitatingly rushed to his aid. As he courageously began to carry the injured man back to cover, the enemy again opened fire and mortally wounded him. By his heroic actions, the lives of two wounded soldiers were saved. Specialist Four Cooley’s gallantry in action and extraordinary dedication to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
