The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Edward Daniel Cherry, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as Pilot of an F-105 Thunderchief, in action near Kep, North Vietnam, on 31 May 1967. On that date, Captain Cherry led a flight of four F-105 Thunderchiefs against Kep Rail Siding, a heavily defended JCS target forty-five miles northeast of Hanoi. Captain Cherry encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire while still thirty miles from the target. Through continuous and ever increasing intensity of anti-aircraft fire bursting at his altitude Captain Cherry, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, steadfastly led his flight to the target. After successfully striking the target, Captain Cherry successfully led his flight through hostile fire to safety. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Cherry has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
