The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain James S. Cassity, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as Pilot of a CH-3 helicopter and Mission Commander of a low level, low speed, helicopter mission near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 11 February 1968. On that date, Captain Cassity led his flight of two CH-3’s through low hanging cloud cover, over large concentrations of hostile forces to start his target run. Despite accurate ground fire which severely damaged the tail rotor of his aircraft, Captain Cassity delivered his ordnance with pinpoint accuracy. He maintained control of his aircraft, and command of his flight and led them safely back to his home base. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Cassity has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air force.
