The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Frank Cardile (AFSN: FR-7077), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Cardile distinguished himself as Deputy Commander for Tactical Systems, and as Vice Commander, Electronic Systems Division, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, from 25 July 1988 to 14 July 1991. During this period, General Cardile’s outstanding achievements and dynamic leadership and initiative resulted in the development, acquisition, and operational fielding of numerous command, control, communications, and intelligence weapons and support systems. These systems greatly enhanced the readiness and capability of the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and other combat forces. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Cardile reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders G-109 (January 8, 1969)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain Frank Cardile (AFSN: FR-7077), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as an HH-3E Pilot of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, 3d Aerospace and Recovery Group, SEVENTH Air Force, DaNang Air Base, Vietnam, in action near the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam, on 30 March 1968. On that date, Captain Cardile flew over hostile territory in low overcast weather to reach the survivors from six downed United States helicopters. Forced by opposing fire to abandon his first approach, he persisted in the rescue attempt, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, until the most severely wounded survivors were rescued. Only then did fuel shortage, aircraft malfunctions, and the critical wounds of the survivors compel him to leave the rescue site. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Cardile has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Cardile attempted the rescue of a downed fighter pilot who was surrounded by hostile forces. After his aircraft was hit and driven off by intense hostile fire during one approach, Captain Cardile attempted to recover a pilot whose capture appeared imminent. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Captain Cardile persisted in the recovery effort until his helicopter was disabled and on fire. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Cardile has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
